Why are writers like Rachel Cusk making it so hard to enjoy a story and instead focus on style and writing dexterity? I love literary fiction, but I also like a story I can sink into. I almost put this book down, but ended up skipping half of it just to find some story line I could follow. Yes, Ms. Cusk knows how to write, and yes, it's impressive. But so what? The writing is so dense, and most of the time I was scratching my head wondering what in the world she was getting at. I suppose writers are always looking for new ways to express themselves, but they end up boring me to death. Just tell me the story, tell it well, and stop trying to impress everyone with your talent.
